there are certain criteria we adhere to when selecting a craft line for our store. we like beautiful handmade things for the tables and for adding flair to food presentation. but most importantly the craft piece has to be functional and last a lifetime. while there are plenty of great artisans and their creations around the world, we choose to limit our collections to works made within north america. some of our artists also have recognitions in the fine art world.
these are some of our major craft collections:
peàn doubulyu glass — a partnership that started in 1981 by elizabeth pannell and james watkins, both graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design. their lines, having self descriptive names such as wackie, wonkie and dottie ware, are sold across the country in department stores, museum shops and galleries. these glassware are expressive, fun and a joy to use.
ed wohl — his solid bird’s-eye maple cutting boards are truly unique. bird’s-eye maple exhibits a pattern of hundreds of small oval figures resembling bird’s eyes. only one in perhaps 500 hard maple trees will exhibit this pattern, and experts are uncertain why it occurs. individually hand-sanded, hand-beveled, and finished to a sensual silkiness, each board is an art object designed to add aesthetic and utilitarian pleasure to your daily life. these boards are the smoothest wood boards you’ll ever find!
mussels and more — a husband and wife team producing exceptional pieces of handmade pottery. the interesting detail work on both the top and bottom of the “shells” enable it to be enjoyed and viewed from either side. these very original pottery are oven safe so that wonderful foods can be baked and presented “right in the shell”. the “shells” and the accent plates, platters, bowl and mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
david lory — since 1977, david lory has been creating beautiful bowls of wood finished with an epoxy that preserves the beauty of the wood with minimal care. he uses wood found generally in the tri-state corner of WI, IL, and IA. the most spectacular pieces are made from burls and spalted wood. his bowl are unlike any other wood bowls around, so thin yet durable.
hilborn pottery — another husband and wife team, rick and nancy hilborn, with a line of wheel thrown, hand built pottery. nancy’s creative and unique design style is well-known and respected across north america, not to mention winning numerous awards and commissions. outstanding quality, food and drink safe, as well as oven, microwave, and dishwasher proof. great as a gift or for yourself!
sherwood forest design — soli pierce incorporates her love for art and home to create cheerful and elegant hand-painted bowls. she chooses maple hardwood for its durability. the bowls are finished with non-toxic materials and as a final finish four layers of food-safe sealer are applied. this process creates depth and allows you to enjoy this work of art as a functional salad, pasta or fruit bowl. these bowls are popular as a wedding or housewarming gift.
